06 Oct, 2010 -- Friends to Freedom Wagon Train -- Its Sarah Weeks here again. You may have heard a little about this event by now or maybe not. So I’d like to take a moment of your time to explain it a bit and to ask for helpers. Plans are currently well underway for the first annual Friends to Freedom Wagon Train, which will be held October, 6, 7, 8 & 9 2010 here in Perquimans County. Attached you will find a copy of the mailer that will be sent to over five hundred area Equestrians and a map of the planned Wagon train route. The idea of the Wagon event came about after a very successful trail ride in November that I helped organize up in Severn NC for the Murfreesboro Historical Association. The weekend event grossed over $14,500. It brought over 447 riders to a town that has less than 200 residents. Participants were so impressed with the beauty of the trail and the hospitality of the affair, they overwhelmingly pleaded and begged with us for a spring event. We are obliging them this April with another ride and it has now become a permanent fixture to MHA’s calendar of events. PCRA garnered a small portion of the proceeds of this first event because I began my involvement with the project while still working with the state as the HTO and with PCRA. Many of the people whom I had asked to help me with the Severn ride were friends that I knew from Perquimans and adjacent counties. After our success at Severn, we all began brainstorming about how we could do something similar, but closer to home. Something that 100% of the profits would benefit PCRA. Having cut over 18 miles of trails in Severn for the last year, none of us were chomping at the bit to drag out chainsaws and machetes to tackle another trail anytime soon. So after a few more conversations with friends who still want to do something for PCRA, we came up with the Wagon Train. The premise for the Wagon train is simply a living narrative of our area Quaker heritage. The wagon train will be a two day 23 mile trek across the county recounting the early Quaker exodus to Ohio and Indiana which began around 1816. There are bunches more to tell about this exciting event and how it is already involving and benefiting not only PCRA but other civic groups with the spin off activities. I will be having a planning meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 4pm at the NWH visitor center. I would love to tell you more about this awe-inspiring event. If you are interested in assisting me with this project, or if you would just simply like more information I encourage you to come. You can also contact me by email at scott1sarah@embarqmail.com or by phone, 330-2494.You do not need to know anything about horses to lend a hand. Click for flyer
